The committee of experts appointed to investigate the methods for the disposal of victims of Covid-19 asked the authorities to continue the cremation process before the final report has been submitted.
Dr Asela Gunawardena, Director-General of Health Services, said the committee of experts had conveyed this to the Secretary of the Ministry of Health.
The Health Ministry appointed a committee of experts after the Muslim community raised questions about the cremation of victims of Covid-19, arguing that it challenges the dictates of their faith.
The subject was brought to the attention of the Cabinet of Ministers as well.
The Cabinet, however, agreed to refer the matter back to the committee of experts to look into the possibility of burying victims of Covid-19 in a remote, dry area.
