According to State Minister of Finance Ajith Nivard Cabraal, the advances made by banks and financial institutions only increased by Rs.27 billion to Rs.237 billion in the first nine months to September 2020 (12).
“The Central Bank of Sri Lanka (CBSL) clearly reported that pawning loans issued by banks and financial institutions were Rs. 210 billion by the end of December 2019 and this increased to Rs. 237 billion by the end of September 2020. Thus only Rs. 27 billion increased.”
The State Minister referred to SJB MP Kabir Hashim’s comment that pawning loans had increased to Rs.643 billion this year.
