The National Election Commission (NEC) has recognized six new political parties in Sri Lanka for 2020. The newly registered political parties are Pivithuru Hela Urumaya, Sinhala Ravaya, Arunalu Janatha Peramuna, Peoples Servants Party, New Democratic Marxist Leninist Party, and Samathuva Kachchi.
Applications for recognition of political parties were made by a public announcement in January 2020 and 154 applications were received. After a preliminary examination of the applications, interviews were conducted for 121 applications and, at the end of the process, the above-mentioned political parties were chosen, the Commission explained in a press release.
Political parties were registered by the National Election Commission in respect of powers conferred on the Commission under Section 7(4) and (5) of the Law on Parliamentary Elections, No 01, 1981.
