Local News: Education Minister Prof. G.L Peiris said the decision has been taken to accept an additional 405 students for the country’s six main engineering faculties.
This was revealed by the Minister when participating in a discussion held at the Ward Place premises of the Ministry of Higher Education.
These 405 students are to be admitted to Peradeniya, Jayewardenepura, Jaffna, Ruhuna, Moratuwa and South Eastern universities, which currently have six major faculties of engineering in Sri Lanka.
The Minister shared his views, saying that, as the Minister, neither he nor the government plans to intervene in the administration of the universities.
“We want to act in accordance with the Vision of Prosperity policy statement presented by the President to achieve its goals, especially to address the current mismatch between university education and the job market. To this end, we are taking a step forward by enrolling 405 new students this year in the engineering course, which is a career-oriented course,” he said.
Secretary to the Higher Education Ministry Prof. Kapila Perera, Chairman of the University Grants Commission Prof. Sampath Amaratunga, its Secretary Dr. Priyantha Premakumara and the Vice Chancellors and Deans of the respective Universities were also present on the occasion.
