Local News | Colombo: Under the patronage of party leader Ranil Wickremasinghe, the United National Party (UNP) last evening marked the Party’s 74th anniversary in a very simple way at Sirikotha Party Headquarters.
Secretary-General Akila Viraj Kariyawasam, Deputy Secretary-General Ruwan Wijewardene, Navin Dissanayake, John Amaratunga, Daya Gamage, Arjuna Rantunga, Vajira Abeywardena and other senior members of the party attended.
The UNP is considered as the oldest founding right wing party in the country. The party was founded on 6 September 1946 by amalgamating three right-leaning pro-dominion parties from the majority Sinhalese community and minority Tamil and Muslim communities under the leadership of D.S. Senanayake, who became the island’s first Prime Minister, in a bid to gain independence from the British rule. More Local News
