Local News: Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa has given instructions to take steps to release 46 children with their inmate mothers who currently live in prisons.
In a release published recently (22), the Office of the Prime Minister said the media reports were brought to the Premier ‘s attention regarding 46 resident children of female inmates currently serving their sentences in various prisons across the country.
Thus, the State Minister for Prison Reforms and Rehabilitation of Prisoners Sudarshani Fernandopulle was directed to look into the matter, the release read further.
Such babies, below the age of 05, are held under court orders with their mothers, who have been arrested for drug-related and other offences, according to records. Some of these female prisoners had been held in remand custody during their pregnancy and the rest of them had already been with their newborns when they were sentenced to jail.
When inquiring about the steps to be taken with regard to these children, State Minister Fernandopulle said that relevant information is being collected and that the Prime Minister will be properly aware of the legal structure and the measures relating to children’s release.
