Local News: The Government today resumed repatriation of Sri Lankans stranded overseas as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, which had previously been temporarily halted.
Almost 440 Sri Lankans from Dubai in the United Arab Emirates are scheduled to return today, while a special flight has also been scheduled for Lebanon.
Deputy Secretary to President Admiral Jayanath Colombage said that nearly 18, 500 stranded Sri Lankans have so far been repatriated from almost 93 countries.
The repatriation process was initially halted due to an outbreak of COVID-19 at the Kandakadu Rehabilitation Centre, and was temporarily halted again in the run-up to the 2020 general election held on 05 August.
Admiral Colombage said that the repatriation process will start again from today and will focus mainly on Middle Eastern countries.
