Local News: During the coronavirus pandemic, popular international vlogger Nas Daily – Nuseir Yassin called Sri Lanka the most generous country to assist stranded tourists in the midst of an economic crisis.
The “Tourism Disaster Management and Hosting Programme” of the South Asian island nation received strong praise from Yassin, in a video posted by its company Nas Daily Corporation, widely circulated on social media.
The program was initiated by the Tourism and Tourist Police National Association for Professionals to locate and assist stranded visitors by offering dry rations and other facilities.
“Sri Lanka continued to handle tourists with dignity and respect even when tourism went down to zero,” Yassin said.
He pointed out that residents who provided them with food and lodging had regarded 14 tourists stranded in Elle – 112 kilometers from the capital Colombo as a “family.”
Sri Lanka bolted its doors in mid-March for passenger flights and ships as part of efforts to curb coronavirus spread but allowed flights to depart.
Known for its serenity and varied environments, Sri Lanka thrives on the tourism industry that has been badly affected by the global COVID-19 pandemic, adding to the economic woes of the region.
The tourism industry, which faced a severe blow following last year’s terrorist attacks, was expected to rebound this year, but authorities have projected that tourist arrivals by 2020 will fall below its four million goal due to coronavirus spreading.
