Local News: The Secretary to President Dr. PB Jayasundara has asked all state employees to donate the entire salary or a portion of it to the government for the month of May considering the current situation in the country.
The request was submitted in writing to the government, provincial, district and division secretaries, and heads of departments, corporations, state banks, public organizations, and statutory boards.
The Secretary to the President said paying salaries has become a difficult task as state revenue methods have been obstructed while international debt management has also been affected.
Dr. Jayasundara said Rs.100 billion is spent monthly on paying public sector wages and salaries, adding that if the funds could be diverted to widows and orphans fund payments for this month’s state income could be increased.
The Secretary to the President indicated that he had asked himself to direct his monthly salary for this reason. The letter also states that all members of the Presidential Secretariat have been helpful in joining those efforts.
Although recognizing that certain workers will not be able to donate their whole month’s wages, he has asked to contribute half or a week’s or day’s pay.
The President’s secretary said donating salaries would ease the economic burden and be considered a responsible social action.
