Development News Update: Minister of Industrial Development, Investment Promotion and Civil Aviation Prasanna Ranatunga said that under Japanese assistance, work on expanding the Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) will be accelerated. This week, the related Cabinet Paper will be addressed to Cabinet members, “he added.
These observations were made by the Minister when he recently met with Japanese Ambassador to Sri Lanka, Akira Sugiyama. Following Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa’s former president and recent visits to Japan in 2013, Sri Lanka received a Rs.49 billion loan package for a new terminal and aircraft apron at the BIA.
The previous government, however, went slow on this project and could not complete it on scheduled time. The minister said that this government has given priority to this project and expects to complete it in January next year. Japanese Ambassador to Sri Lanka Akira Sugiyama assured that more Japanese tourists will come to Sri Lanka with the restoration of peace and stability in the coming years.
