Local News from Sri Lanka: During September 2019, the total number of international tourist arrivals to Sri Lanka was 108,575. As of September 30, 2019, 1,376,312 tourists visited Sri Lanka for this year. However, compared to September 2018, arrivals fell to 27.2 million and tourist arrivals dropped to 20.5 percent in the first nine months of the year.
Nevertheless, after the Easter Sunday attacks in April this year, tourist arrivals have slowly risen. Tourist arrivals year-on-year declined 28% in August, 46% in July, 57% in June, and 70.8% in May this year.
In the month of September this year, India, China, United Kingdom, Australia and Germany were the top five international tourism producing markets in Sri Lanka. With 27 percent of the total traffic received in September 2019, India was the largest source of tourist traffic to Sri Lanka. China accounted for 8% of total traffic; while UK, Australia, and Germany accounted for 8%, respectively 6% (both).
It has been confirmed that 21,000 people from 40 countries have arrived in Sri Lanka to attend the World Annual Bora Conference held in Colombo from September 1-10, 2019. The conference has therefore made it easier for the tourism industry to hit last month’s 100,000 marks.
