Sports News from Sri Lanka: Former Sri Lankan cricket captain Dinesh Chandimal is going to enter the army as a commissioned officer, Major General Sumith Atapattu, spokesperson for the army, said yesterday.
Today Chandimal will be enlisted in the Army headquarters as a commissioned officer. The rank for the corresponding post will be revealed later, according to the press spokeswoman.
Close sources said the article will rank Chandimal as a major. According to the Army Cricket Committee, he will be enlisted in the Sri Lankan Army Volunteer Force of the Sri Lankan Army Ordnance Corps.
Maj. Gen. Atapattu said the Ministry of Defense accepted Chandimal’s application and he is anticipated to play for the cricket squad of the Sri Lankan Army. The spokesperson for the army added that in the near future the former domestic captain would face an entrance test.
Close representatives from the Sri Lankan Army Cricket squad also disclosed that in the near future two more senior players will join the army and there are present debates going on.
Chandimal was the main member of the 2012 ICC World Twenty20 runner-up squad and the 2014 winning team of ICC World Twenty20. He resulted in Sri Lanka on the 2014 ICC World Twenty20 group stage.
