Local News from Sri Lanka: Six applicants have presented money deposits to challenge the November 16 presidential polls so far. On Friday, three applicants, Sri Lanka’s Gotabaya Rajapaksa Podujana Peramuna, Ape Jana Balaya’s Prasanna Perera and an autonomous candidate, Ven. Their deposits were sent by Aparakke Punyananda Thera.
Earlier, two other autonomous candidates, Jayantha Ketagoda and Siripala Amarasinghe, and Dr. Ajantha Perera of the Sri Lankan Socialist Party, produced their cash deposits. Deposit acceptance, which started on September 19, ends on October 6 at 12 midnight.
The Secretariat of Elections said that in terms of law, a candidate contesting from a political party is needed to create a deposit of Rs. 50,000, while an independent candidate should send Rs 75,000. Chairman of the Commission of Elections, Mahinda Deshapriya said previously that he expected to run the presidential race with around 20 aspirants.
