From 29 August to 02 September 2019, the Consulate General of Sri Lanka in Mumbai, in collaboration with the Sri Lankan Export Development Board, effectively arranged the Production Process Improvement & Market Penetration Program-2019 for SME exporters in the Sri Lankan food industry.
The aim of this program was to provide the needed understanding and exposure to Sri Lankan SME exporters to join the Indian market. The Consulate General of Sri Lanka’s Commercial Section structured and coordinated the program.
The program coincided with the exhibition Annapoorna Anufood-2019 that took place from 29th to 31st August 2019 at the Bombay Exhibition Centre. Led by Mr. Sandun Sameera, Consul (Commercial), the Sri Lankan delegation held B2B sessions with members of the Indian Importers Forum (FIFI), trade-related officials, importers and exhibitors representing India’s Food & Beverage Industry.
The delegation also took part in a Retail CEO Roundtable discussion on “Changing Flavors of Food Business: Opportunities & Challenges” and a seminar on “Import Issues & Customs Regulations” organized by the Indian Food Importers Forum. Sri Lankan delegation also interacted with representatives from India’s Spice Board and the Indian Food Safety and Standards Authority where Sri Lankan delegation was briefed on packaging and labeling criteria when exporting products to India.
A visit to Reliance Corporate Park in Navi Mumbai was also arranged to provide an chance to connect with Indian retail / supermarket chains. During the visit, the delegation from Sri Lanka had the chance to present their products and discuss company possibilities with Reliance Retail Limited senior officials. Reliance Retail Limited is a subsidiary of Reliance Industries Limited and with 10,644 shops in 6,700 + towns, it is India’s biggest retailer.
The option of showing Sri Lankan products counter in the reliance shops was studied during the conference, to which Reliance retail received significant interest. In addition, Reliance officers highlighted the excellent chance for agro-food exporters in Sri Lanka to purchase directly from Sri Lankan providers on the Mumbai market.
