Local News from Sri Lanka: Sajith Premadasa, Deputy Leader of the United National Party (UNP), announced today that he is ready to give way if the UNP chooses to select another candidate to contest the presidential elections by majority vote.
Speaking at today’s special press briefing, Premadasa said that if there are other candidates interested in contesting the election, a debate can take place with the UNP Parliamentary Group and Working Committee and select the most appropriate candidate by secret ballot.
Premadasa said yesterday in a letter to UNP leader Ranil Wickremesinghe he had expressed his plans. The UNP Deputy Leader said he would follow the UNP democratic process to be selected as the candidate for the presidency.
He also said he had meetings with several parties to get their assistance for the election, including the Tamil National Alliance and some members of Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna.
