Local News from Sri Lanka: Professor Carlo Fonseka, former president of the Sri Lankan Medical Council (SLMC), aged 86, passed away today (02) because of illness. Fonseka was a former dean of Kelaniya University’s Faculty of Medicine.
Professor Fonseka was a leading member of the Trotskyist Lanka Sama Samaja Party (LSSP) as a political activist. He was a member of the central committee and political bureau of the party and was in charge of its branch in Kotte.
He was a vocal critic of private medical education and in the early 1980s campaigned against the NCMC. Also a lyricist and composer, Fonseka has made several albums including Carlochita Gee (1992) and Raththaran Duwe (2006).
