Local News from Sri Lanka: President Maithripala Sirisena ordered the Commander of the Army and the Governor of the Northern Provincial Council to release the land held by the army and issue a complete report by October 1.
Addressing the meeting at the Jaffna Municipal Council, during his visit to Jaffna on Friday (30), he said that nearly all the land occupied by the safety forces had been released to their original destination.
“I also directed that the Secretary of Defence, Tri-force commanders, politicians and officials all work towards that end. Some state departments have stopped functioning because they don’t get resources on time, “he said.
“Speaker of the Tamil National Alliance (TNA) M.A. Sumanthiran, raised the problem of not having fulfilled all commitments. He said they put their trust in me and only backed me because I was going to deliver. I am in the process of bringing forward the exceptional problems.
I’m touring Jaffna with that intention. Due to the civil war, the president added that there were plenty of state and private properties in the custody of the security forces.
He said he had met with TNA officials before his visit to the North and assured them that by Oct 1, all lands would be returned to their respective owners.
