Local News from Sri Lanka: Mahinda Deshapriya, Chairman of the National Elections Commission, states they are hoping to hold an election for Elpitiya Pradeshiya Sabha within the first week of October this year.
After accepting nominations from the Democratic United National Front (DUNF), the Supreme Court today instructed the Elections Commission to hold the Elpitiya Pradeshiya Sabha elections.
Previously, the DUNF had lodged a petition alleging an injustice as their nominations had been dismissed for the Elpitiya Pradeshiya Sabha’s local government election.
The petition was taken up today (30) before a three-judge bench consisting of Murdu Fernando, Prasanna Jayewardene and Vijith Malalgoda, Supreme Court Justices.
The judge bench instructed the Election Commission to acknowledge the DUNF’s rejected nominations for the Elpitiya Pradeshiya Sabha by delivering the petition verdict.
The Supreme Court issued an interim injunction on 30 January 2018 to prevent elections to the Elpitiya Pradeshiya Sabha after considering the DUNF petition in connection with the upcoming Local Government polls.
