Business News from Sri Lanka: Hilton Colombo Residences has introduced its new “Soap for Hope” soap recycling initiative Hilton Colombo Residences will partner with sister hotels Hilton Colombo, Waldorf Astoria Maldives Ithaafushi and Conrad Maldives Rangali Island to obtain partially used soap bars from them for recycling, after which the hotel will be liable for the sanitation and manufacture of fresh soap bars.
In their dedication to soap recycling, Hilton Colombo Residences joins more than 4,400 Hilton hotels around the globe. This significant initiative will have a dual effect: provide a sustainable way to remove partly used soap bars and enhance sanitation norms across Sri Lankan societies.
Hilton Colombo Residences will partner with SERVE, a local Moratuwa-based NGO that works to empower low-income groups in Sri Lanka for children and women. The NGO currently operates with over 2,000 women and over 3,500 kids and will distribute it to needy families with sanitation and hygiene training.
“Hilton Colombo Residences is committed to having a positive environmental and social impact. In celebration of this year’s 100th anniversary of Hilton, we introduced a campaign’ No Plastic Bags’ to raise awareness about the harmful effect of single-use plastic. This is the next phase on our trip, “said Hilton Colombo Residences general manager Linda Giebing.
“We’ve partnered with Hilton Colombo and two of our Maldives hotels that will send us used soap that would otherwise end up in landfills and it’s just incredible to see the effect that we can have on helping different communities enhance their sanitation norms while taking care of the environment. We will channel the brand new soap through SERVE, working with over 3,000 kids to educate them on the need for health and sanitation, “Giebing added.
Sanjeeva de Mel, SERVE’s executive director said, “SERVE has a 20-year history in Sri Lanka that operates in ten districts, both urban and rural. We are working to empower over 2,000 women in low-income groups in the nation and over 3,500 kids. We are pleased to tackle health and sanitation in these groups by joining hands with Hilton on this project. “De Mel,” he said.
The World Health Organization estimates that two million partially used soap bars are sent every day to landfills. Hilton Colombo Residences takes a proactive strategy to recycling partly used soap in their guest rooms through this initiative.
Traveling with Purpose is the corporate responsibility strategy of Hilton to redefine and promote global sustainable travel. By 2030, we intend to double our investment in social effect and halve our footprint on the environment.
