Local News from Sri Lanka: Yesterday, under the patronage of PM Ranil Wickremesinghe, the passenger boat service running on the Beira Lake from Union Place to Colombo Fort was launched. The boat service, which was proposed as a solution to the heavy traffic congestion in the town, is managed by the Sri Lankan Land Development Corporation (SLLDC).
This service is run by the Sri Lanka Land Development Corporation. The passenger ferry service is in operation following a feasibility study on the feasibility of launching a passenger ferry service across the city as a solution to the severe traffic congestion around Colombo.
Currently, a bus ride from Colombo Fort to Union Place takes about 30 minutes and can reach the destination in between 9-10 minutes. The ferry service will commence tomorrow under the patronage of Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe at the invitation of the Municipal Council Minister Champika Ranawaka.
Passengers will be able to get this service free of charge within the first month. Operated in conjunction with the Sri Lanka Navy, the vessel operates in accordance with all safety regulations required to be followed by the Navy.
