Secretary of State of the United States, Michael R. Pompeo, is due to visit Sri Lanka later this month in his upcoming swing through Asia.
During his Asian tour from June 24 to 30 Pompeo is planned to visit India, Sri Lanka, Japan, and South Korea, US State Department spokesman Morgan Ortagus told a press briefing in Washington, DC. on Monday.
The visit by the US Secretary of State, known to be a personality close to President Donald Trump, is to “express America’s solidarity with the people of Sri Lanka” after Easter Sunday bomb attacks, Ortagus said. She said that the US State Secretary (US’ foreign affairs minister) would discuss with the Sri Lankan authorities about “promising opportunities for US-Sri Lanka co-operation based on shared commitments to a free and open Indo-Pacific region”.
The State Secretary’s first stop will be in New Delhi, India. Prime Minister Modi’s recent election victory “provides an excellent opportunity for him to implement his vision for a strong and prosperous India that plays a leading role on the global stage”, Ortagus said.
